The iPhone 14 Plus support fast charging. If your iPhone 14 Plus is charging slower than it should, here are some ways to fix it.
Fast charging is the perfect feature for people who hate to wait for their iPhones to get powered up before leaving for an evening out with friends and family. After just a short charge time, you can use your iPhone for hours. Apple includes fast charging in iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
Although it is a big selling point for Apple, it can also be problematic at times. Here are a few fixes you can try if your iPhone 14 Plus is charging slowly.
How to fix an iPhone 14 Plus that is charging slowly
There are many reasons why your iPhone 14 Plus is not charging faster, but the most common reasons are easy to fix. If your iPhone 14 Plus is charging slowly, follow the steps below to fix it.
Note: information in this article apply to iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
1. Make sure you are using the right cable
A USB-C connection is required for this fast charging option for your iPhone 14 Plus. So, if you want to start enjoying these faster charging times, then your first step is to use a USB-C to Lightning cable adapter.
2. Use a powerful power adapter
Along with the fast charging cable, you’ll need a special charging block. If you plug your iPhone 14 Plus into an older power adapter, like one that came with an older iPhones, it might deliver significantly less power and slow down the charging process.
Fast charging works when you use an Apple USB-C to Lightning cable and one of these adapters:
Apple 18W, 20W,2 29W, 30W, 35W, 61W, 67W, 87W, or 96W, or 140W USB-C Power Adapter
A comparable third-party USB-C power adapter that supports USB Power Delivery (USB-PD)
If you’re not sure which Apple Power Adapter you have, check the wattage on the top or bottom of the adapter.
3. Charge using a physical charging cable, not a wireless charger
A wireless charging pad is yconvenient, but it’s significantly slower than plugging your iPhone in with a cable the old-fashioned way.
The reason? Wireless chargers are generally capped at a much lower power level which means they can take almost twice as long as using a USB cable, which can carry 20 watts or more to your iPhone 14 Plus.
If you must use a wireless charger, u can take advantage of Apple’s new MagSafe feature, which allows for charging speeds of up to 15W — twice what you’ll get from a non-MagSafe charger.
These chargers magnetically attach to the back of an iPhone 14 Plus and display an animated ring on the iPhone screen to confirm that you’re taking advantage of the fastest MagSafe charging speeds.
Be careful when shopping for a MagSafe charger. Many third-party accessory makers have added a ring of magnets to a standard Qi charger so they’ll attach nicely to an iPhone, and they sometimes advertise these as “MagSafe-compatible.” However, only genuine MagSafe chargers certified by Apple will provide faster 15W speeds. You should be fine if you stick with an established Apple partner brand such as Belkin, Mophie, or Scosche. These companies do sell regular Qi magnetic chargers, but they’re careful to avoid the word “MagSafe” for those, so you’ll always be sure which one you’re getting — just try and avoid phrases “MagSafe-compatible” as that generally means they have the magnets, but not the faster-charge.
4. Try a Different Fast Charging Accessory on your iPhone 14 Plus
The weakest link in your iPhone’s charging system is the cable you use to plug it in.
Even if it’s not obviously frayed, kinked, or damaged, USB cables can be damaged internally, which affects how much current they can carry.
If you suspect your iPhone 14 Plus is charging slowly than it used to, one of the easiest ways to troubleshoot is to replace the cable and power adapter.
5. Turn Off Cellular Data or Wi-Fi
If you don’t want to keep switching into Low Power Mode every time you plug in your phone, turning off Wi-Fi and Cellular data can be a good compromise. Even when you aren’t using your phone, these connections might still be drawing the power. Turning them off may speed up the charge time of your iPhone 14 Plus.
To make things easier, always put your iPhone 14 Plus in Airplane mode before connecting your charger to speed up the process.
This is because it disables cellular data and WiFi.
But, keep in mind, it also means you won’t be able to make or receive phone calls, use apps, or browse the web.
6. Clean the Charger Port
Another possible reason iPhone 14 Plus is charging slowly is the accumulation of dirt or residue in the charging port. Your charger can’t operate at its full capacity or even at all if it has dirt or lint in it.
Using a toothpick or needle, remove any dirt, grime, or other residues. You can also use a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol inside the charging port in circular motions. Afterward, put it in a cool, dry place for at least an hour. Don’t worry about the liquid in the dock; it will naturally evaporate.
7. Change the Charging Outlet
There is also the possibility that a faulty outlet does not supply enough current to support fast charging. Your charger won’t be drawing the power at the required rate to fast-charge your iPhone 14 Plus in the absence of sufficient power.
Try a different charging outlet to see if that makes a difference.
If you are using any other power source, like an external power bank, make sure it has enough wattage to support fast charging on your iPhone 14 Plus.
8. Charge Your Phone in Low Power Mode
The low power mode feature can dramatically cut down on background apps and processes that eat up your system resources and helps your phone’s battery last longer.
With the minimal battery draining, it may also quicken the charging process. Therefore, consider charging your iPhone 14 Plus in low power mode. You can enableit by following the steps below:
- Go to Settings.
- Tap on Battery.
- Select Low Power Mode and turn on the toggle.
9. Lower the screen brightness
Screen brightness is another battery hog that can cause slow charging speed on iPhone 14 Plus, so make sure it’s turned down when you’re powering up.
You can quickly do this via Control Center, which has a brightness bar that can be dragged up or down.
Alternatively, follow the steps below:
- Go to Settings.
- Tap Display & Brightness.
- Drag the slider to lower the screen brightness.
10. Do a Factory Reset
In case none of the fixes work, you can try factory resetting the iPhone 14 Plus. As the name suggests, a factory reset returns your phone its to default settings.
This gives your phone a fresh start and may solve the slow charging problem on your iPhone 14 Plus.
Since the process deletes all of your data, it’s always a good idea to backup your iPhone before you perform the reset.
To factory reset your iPhone 14 Plus, follow the steps below:
- Go to Settings.
- Select General.
- Tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Tap Erase all Content and Settings.
11. Temporality disable optimized battery charging
If your iPhone 14 Plus stops charging at 80%, it’s most likely due to a feature Apple introduced way back called Optimized Battery Charging. The feature is designed to prevent over-stressing the battery and hence extend the battery life of your iPhone by limiting the charge to 80%.
The Optimized Battery Charging feature is enabled by default on the iPhone 14 Plus. But if you don’t want your iPhone 14 Plus to charge slowly when the charging gets to 80%, you can easily disable this feature in the battery settings.
So, follow the steps below to turn off Optimized Battery Charging on your iPhone 14 Plus:
- Go to Settings.
- Select Battery.
- Tap Battery Health.
- Toggle off Optimized Battery Charging.
- Select from one of the two options: Turn Off Until Tomorrow or Turn Off (permanently).
12 Seek professional help
So far, so good; the above steps should fix your iPhone 14 Plus slow charging issue. However, if none of them did the trick, there may be a hardware issue that’s causing your iPhone 14 Plus to charge slowly. Consider visiting your nearest Apple store for further help.
